HEY MERLIN! The path to the house -- the path is overgrown The door swings open -- there is no one home They say a man lived here many years ago But what happened to this man no one knows They say he had -- he had some magic friends and they all met -- they all met tragic ends Banished and scattered the wizards died and now all the legends lie Hey Merlin, Hey Merlin don't believe a word they say Hey Merlin, Hey Merlin it was worth it anyway Living backwards in time Losing your mind You fall from grace -- fall from grace before you're there They soil your name -- soil it to protect theirs All laughter and joking is illegal now They'd ridicule you but they don't know how © & ℗ 2020 People Suck Music

about

Big news! TMJ has had so much fun doing these First Friday releases for Bandcamp, we've decided to make a new record, half of which will be songs we wrote back in the '90s but never captured in the studio, and half of which will be brand new tunes.

This single, like last month's, is an example of that approach: "Pong!" just sprang to life in July, while "Hey Merlin!" was originally a live-to-two-track demo for CEREAL KILLERS the band always wanted to give a more loving studio treatment, but never got around to, until now.

We expect to be back in December with the full LP, though there's a slight chance we'll release another teaser track or two between now and then. In the meantime, play Pong, and/or go pre-order the forthcoming LP on Indiegogo: bit.ly/TMJIndie

credits

released August 7, 2020

Jay Blumenfield played guitar and sang and said he'll only keep doing this if it remains fun.

Tim Quirk spent a weekend at Jay's house singing and insisting, "This IS fun. We're having fun!"

Sandy Smallens played bass and guitar and sang and drank very expensive scotch.

Tommy Vinton just drummed. Hard.

William Wittman played guitar and mellotron and sang whilst drinking even more expensive whisky that he brought back from Japan, back when that was still a thing you could do. He also explained that there's no "e" in "whiskey" when it's Yamazaki.

Basic tracks recorded by Matt Noble at Riverworks Recording, Dobbs Ferry, NY. Other tracks recorded by Sandy and Bill at their respective houses, and by Leo Blumenfield in his bedroom.

Mixed by William Wittman

about

Too Much Joy Scarsdale, New York

TMJ is/was a punk-pop band of some minor renown. Some of that renown was due to their music, which included semi-hits such as “Crush Story,” “Donna Everywhere,” and “That’s a Lie” — a cover of the LL Cool J tune that featured the man himself in the music video, which actually got played quite a bit during daylight hours on MTV back when they did that sort of thing. ... more
